Earth Day Tips For Cleaner Living
Happy Earth Day!
Here are some green living tips I’ve learned over the years through our journey when our family made the switch to go green. I cleaned out our house of toxic chemicals and toxic food when our first son was born about 13 years ago. That is when I really got into cleaner living and eating. I’ve always been very much into the ECO idea of living since I group up in Finland. Scandinavia is known for their efforts on green living. I don’t obsess over it though because being a very busy mom of 3 children who do multiple sports and after school activities, life just gets too busy to be able to do everything. There are times when we do a drive thru run but we try and limit it to special occasion. Also when my children are at other people’s houses or at birthday parties etc, I don’t worry about what they eat. They can eat whatever is served. I just try and teach them moderation. A piece of cake and a slice of pizza or a few pieces of candy at a kids birthday party isn’t going to do much harm nor is occasional soda.
1. Swap out toxic household cleaners for non-toxic options. My favorite companies are Seventh Generation, Honest Company and Method. Seventh Generation antibacterial multipurpose cleaner is my every day kitchen cleaner. Their bathroom cleaner is excellent as well.
2. Switch your skin care and makeup to organic or natural. I love Earth Mama Angel Baby for pregnancy and beyond as well as for the little ones. It’s completely non-toxic brand. I also like Seventh Generation soaps and body creams. Another favorite of mine is John Masters Body care. I still use other skin care products as well but try and choose organic or natural most of the days. There are several small organic skin care companies as well that are worth supporting. Josie Maran is a great natural makeup company.
3. Get rid of toxic hair care products, especially hair spray. My favorite natural hair care brand is John Masters Organics. I’ve used everything from Kerastase to Fredrick Fekkai and Bumble & Bumble hair care but always come back to John Masters because it’s organic and non-toxic.
4. Choose organic and natural foods over conventional packaged foods. Stay away from processed foods as much as possible. We do this at our house but sometimes life gets in the way and Del Taco it is. I try not to get too worried about occasional fast food but I try and choose better options which means Happy Meals are out for our kids unless it’s a fundraising event for their school. We try and choose healthier foods for our family but sometimes the options are limited in which case we just go with it without feeling bad about it. I think consistency is the key. As long as you are eating healthy most of the time, it’s all good.
